Aurelien Tchouameni gave away an early free-kick to Manchester City after his sliding challenge brought down Jack Grealish. Silva took the free-kick and slid a low shot in at the near post from range. Andriy Lunin did try to get his hand to the ball but it went in as the Cityzens took the lead within two minutes.

This was the first time that Bernardo Silva has scored a goal from a free-kick since joining the Cityzens in 2017. It took him 346 appearances for the club to score from a set-piece. The reigning European champions' celebrations, however, did not last long as Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo scored within a span of two minutes to put the hosts in front.

Tchouameni's tackle on Grealish earned him a yellow card which means the Frenchman will miss the second leg of the fixture at Etihad Stadium. Three other Los Blancos stars Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr. and Eduardo Camavinga will have to remain cautious if they want to travel to England next week.
