Liverpool have been handed a boost to their chances of securing a January transfer deal for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

The Lowdown: Liverpool linked with Gakpo

It was reported last month that the Reds are interested in signing the Dutchman, who recently scored three goals in five appearances for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

Prior to his international efforts in Qatar, the 23-year-old had scored 13 goals and delivered 17 assists in 24 appearances for PSV across all competitions, leaving him with 82 club goals to his name throughout his career.

Now that the January transfer window is around the corner, the Anfield outfit have been handed a potential pathway to launch a move for the player.

The Latest: January exit hint

Speaking to Voetbal International (via 90 Min), PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted the player ‘can’ leave in the winter window, even though the boss would of course like to keep him.

“If I have the choice, I prefer [Gakpo to leave in] the summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”

The Verdict: Time to act

In addition to his goals and assists, the winger has also racked up more shots at goal (49) and more shots on target (24) than any other player in the entire Eredivisie.

He also has the second-highest number of successful dribbles (26) and third-highest number of crosses delivered (134) in the division.

This backs up why journalist Josh Bunting hailed the PSV star as an “electric” player on Twitter back in August, and with Van Nistelrooy hinting at the possibility of Gakpo being allowed to leave in January, this should fire the Reds into action.

Having the likes of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz out injured, Gakpo could be the perfect addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad heading into the second half of the season.
